Study and practice principles and theories of leadership education within a cooperative learning approach in/on various challenge courses throughout the semester. Learn the basics of experiential, adventure-based education and challenge course programming skills, including, but not limited to icebreakers, initiative games, low and high challenges, belay techniques, knots used on challenge courses, and other skills necessary for safe, effective leadership on a challenge course. Offers opportunity to gain 40 hours of training/facilitation skills for Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) portfolio and toward an ACCT Level 1 Practitioner Certification. Learn the fundamental knowledge in the scientific theories needed to design developmentally appropriate motor tasks for school-aged children, which are aligned with the biomechanical and exercise physiological principles in Maryland Physical Education Standards. Apply the scientific principles of motor performance and design motor tasks for the K-12 lessons in physical education. Connect the scientific knowledge of the principles and concepts to motor skill performance in physical education.
Study of language and literacy processes as they apply to teaching across content areas. Emphasis on theory and instructional practice to support secondary students' literacy development. Focus on ways that literacies, defined broadly, are developed and used in learning discipline-specific curriculum, with particular emphases on digital and global literacies and the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse and exceptional learners.
Focus on how demographics, including changes in the size, composition and distribution of populations, interact with production, consumption and distribution of resources to meet human needs durably. Includes critical evaluation of factors associated with long-term changes in human population statics and dynamics with an eye toward possible futures. Explore the role of social workers in various health care settings, as well as best practices for related interventions. The biopsychosocial impact of illness, injury, treatment and loss are evaluated with emphasis on cultural sensitivity. In addition, knowledge of medical terminology, common illnesses and treatment options, including alternative holistic options, are evaluated. Develop an understanding of policies currently impacting access to care and trends in health insurance.
